Abstract

1458351 Soldering fluxes for tinplate N L JACOBS 6 March 1974 [6 Dec 1972] 56248/72 Heading C7M A soldering flux comprises in free acid or ammonium or amine salt form (a) a C 7 -C 11 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and/or an acid organic phosphate and (b) a material selected from dimerised and trimerised unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with at least 10C atoms, saturated C 12 -C 36 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids and rosin. Component (a) is preferably VERSATIC acid (Trade Mark) with a formula CR, R 2 R 3 CO 2 H in which each R is an alkyl group and at least one is methyl and the acid contains 9-11C atoms. Component (b) is preferably dimerised and trimerised oleic acid. The flux may also contain aliphatic or alicyclic dicarboxylic acids e.g. succinic, azelaic, sebacic, fumaric and hydropthalic acids or their half esters. The flux which preferably contains 25-75 wt per cent of component (a) may also contain an emulsifier and a lower alkannel solvent. The flux is used in soldering tinplate cans.
