Abstract

1457972 Ultrasonic inspection devices STAHL WERKE PEINE SALZGITTER AG 26 July 1974 [27 July 1973 (2)] 33173/74 Heading GIG A device for the ultrasonic testing of a moving metal testpiece comprises a support movable towards and away from the test piece at right angles to the feed direction thereof, and at least one ultrasonic head connected to the support by a parallelogram linkage for resiliently urging the head towards the test piece. In the Fig. 1 embodiment sheet 1 is tested by ultrasonic probes 17 arranged in a row extending transversely of the sheet feed direction 2. The probes are urged against the sheet by respective sprung parallelogram linkages 18 supported on a plate 20 which is reciprocated by a motor 16 and counter-balanced crank-drive 24 across the sheet. A trough-like deflector 11 supports the plate 20 on slides 22 and can be raised or lowered by piston-and-cylinder unit 12, being guided by linkage 13. Unit 12 is mounted on a carriage 6 movable along beams 4 to a pre-selected test zone. The Fig. 4 embodiment has a carriage 6 as in Fig. 1, but the trough-like deflector, 27, in this case is pivoted at 28 on an arm 29 extending from the carriage and is raised or lowered by a double piston- and-cylinder unit 30. The latter has both a short stroke, enabling the probes 17 to be positioned just above sheet 1 in a standby mode, and a long stroke for raising the probes well clear of the sheet. Feelers 44, 45 sense the sheet ends or obstructions and control the unit 30 appropriately. Probe support plate 34 and a counter-balance 38 are oppositely reciprocated on a slide assembly 35, 36, 37, by respective crank drives 39, 40. The assembly is readily detachable from deflector 27. In the Fig. 11 embodiment, for testing the edge of a moving sheet 97, each probe 101 is supported by a cardan suspension on a parallelogram linkage 100 fixed to piston and cylinder unit 99. Unit 99 has a support roller 102, which allows it to ride over any sheet distortion such as 104a, and is mounted on deflector 93. An axle 94, by which the deflector is carried on the housing of sheetshear 92, enables the deflector and probes to be pivoted clear of the sheet edge if required. Feelers 104, 105 control unit 99.
