Abstract

1457797 Bituminous composition BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 10 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 04569/74 Headings C3N and C3P A process for preparing a bituminous composition comprises reacting bitumen and 6- 150% by weight of the bitumen of a chlorinated polyolefin at 140-250‹ C. The process may be carried out in the presence of a dehydrochlorinating agent, e.g. zinc oxide. The chlorinated polyolefin may be chlorinated polyethylene or polypropylene. The chlorine content may be 15-45% by weight of the chlorinated polyolefin. It appears that during the heating, cross-linking occurs between unsaturated groups in the bitumen and the polyolefin and this may be assisted by the addition of conventional cross-linking agents and acclerators and also phenol-formaldehyde resins. The bitumen may be a vacuum distillation residue or the product obtained by air blowing such a residue. The composition may also contain a filler such as limestone, fuel ash, carbon black, clay, silica or asbestos. The specific examples refer to the preparation of compositions comprising bitumen and chlorinated polyolefin in a 1 : 1 weight ratio.
