Abstract

1457379 Separating carbon black RUHRCHEMIE AG 18 Aug 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 34282/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Carbon black is separated from water by treatment with a hydrocarbon e.g. naphtha and the greater proportion of the hydrocarbon is separated from the resultant C black/hydrocarbon suspension in a plate separator. The process is particularly applicable to synthesis gas manufacture wherein oxygen 1 and fuel oil 2 are reacted and the resultant gas is freed from C black by scrubbing with water 4. The mixture of C black and water from the scrubber 4 is mixed with naphtha 8 in a decanter 7. The aqueous phase is separated and recycled 11 to the scrubber 4 and the hydrocarbon-C black suspension passed to a plate separator 10. The bulk of the hydrocarbon is separated and recycled 13 to the decanter 7. The C black residue containing 10-15% C black from the bottom of the separator 10 may be mixed with fuel oil and recycled to the reactor 3 or be distilled to recover pure hydrocarbon for recycle to decanter 7, the bottoms of such distillation being recycled to the reactor or used to recover dry C black.
