Abstract

1457205 Sequential polymerization of butadiene and vinyl toluene INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 26 April 1974 [27 April 1973] 18424/74 Heading C3P A thermosetting resin is obtained by a two stage process in which a mixture of butadiene and vinyl toluene is subjected to the action of first a molybdenum compound defined below (to polymerize substantially only the butadiene) and then a free-radical generator. The molybdenum compounds are of the formula where X is halogen, R is H or hydrocarbyl and L is an ether, alcohol or ketone as Lewis base, n is 1, 2 or 3, m is 1 to 4, and p and q are 1 or 2. Examples refer to polymerizing the monomer mixture in bulk using in the first stage, the second stage being carried out in situ in sheets of glass fibre in the presence of 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5- di - t - butyl peroxyhexane or dicumylperoxide.
