Abstract

1457071 Marker buoys SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 21 Jan 1974 02720/74 Heading G4F [Also in Division B7] To investigate whether or not the bottom material under a body of water may be fluidized to permit pipe laying, a sledge 9 is moved over the bottom by being towed from a surface vessel, fluidization fluid e.g. water or air or a mixture of water and air, is delivered to a device 8 mounted on the sledge 9 and provided with openings along its length so as to fluidize an area 16 around the device, and a signal is produced when the device 8 moves a predetermined amount relative to the sludge upon encountering or leaving an area 17 which cannot be fluidized. The signal may be electric, hydraulic or pneumatic which is monitored on the surface vessel but in the preferred embodiment comprises marker buoys 13, 20 which are released respectively when entering or leaving the area 17. In this embodiment the device 8 is mounted on the frame 9 so as to be rotatable about a horizontal axis and is biased into the upright position by an elastic element 21. The marker buoys 13 and 20 may be stowed in respective and similarly operable magazines. As shown in Fig. 4, the marker buoys 13 together with their mooring lines 14 and anchoring elements 18 are stowed in respective pockets 33 of a cylindrical element 32 located within a cylindrical housing 31. Upon the device 8 (schematically repesented by a pecked line) moving from its upright position to an inclined one, a pawl 35 which it carries engages a ratchet wheel 34 to rotate the element 32 and consequently bring a pocket 33 into alignment with an opening in the housing 31 whereby a buoy 13, its mooring line 14 and anchoring element 18 is released. A similar magazine is provided for the marker buoys 20 except that its cylindrical element is rotated by a pawl on the device 8 engaging a ratchet wheel when the device 8 rotates from an inclined position to return to its upright position upon leaving an area which cannot be fluidized (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). A plurality of the devices 8 may be mounted on the sledge to cover a wider strip.
