Abstract

1456273 Anaerobic polymerizable compositions LOCTITE CORP 15 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 1873/74 Heading C3P An anaerobic polymerizable composition comprises a polymerizable ester of acrylic acid or α-substituted acrylic acid including di- or polyacrylate ester monomers, a hydroperoxide capable of polymerizing said monomer in the substantial absence of oxygen, an acidic substance soluble in the mixture of said ester and hydroperoxide, and a substituted thiourea containing a unit of the formula where A is hydrogen or carbon. The composition may be in the form of a two-part composition and may be used to bond substrates, e.g. glass or steel. In the thiourea the carbon atoms may form two heterocyclic rings each containing one of the nitrogen atoms or both nitrogen atoms may be part of the same ring. The composition may contain a polymerization inhibitor and/or accelerator. In the examples a solution of tetramethyl (or ethyl) thiourea, dipentamethylene thiourea, 3,5-dimethyl (or ethyl) hexahydro-1,3, 5 - oxadiazine - 4 - thione trimethylthiourea, or for comparison dimethylthiourea, methylthiourea or thiourea in methyl-chloroform or other organic solvent containing in some ease salicylic acid, dichloroacetic acid or trichloroacetic acid is applied to glass substrates to which is subsequently applied a mixture containing cumene or t-butyl hydroperoxide, tbutyl perbenzoate, or 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-tbutyl peroxy hexane; hydroxypropyl or ethyl methacrylate; acrylic or methacrylic acid; and one or more of the reaction product of hydrogenated bisphenol A, toluene diisocyanate and hydroxypropyl methacrylate, the reaction product of an isocyanate terminated polyether and hydroxyethyl methacrylate, the reaction product of 4,4<SP>1</SP> - diphenylmethylenediisocyanate and hydroxypropylmethacrylate, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate, tributylamine, benzoic sulphimide, dimethyl and/or diethyl o- or ptoluidine and methanol and the substrates are then sealed together.
