1456267 Benzofuran derivatives and their use as optical brighteners HOECHST AG 11 Feb 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 06136/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the general Formula I in which each of A and B, which may be identical or different, represents an aryl or partially hydrogenated mononuclear or polynuclear ring system; each of R<SP>01</SP> and R<SP>02</SP>, which may be identical or different, represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms, a carboxy group, a sulpho group, a functionally modified carboxy or sulpho group, or a phenyl group that is either unsubstituted or substituted by one or more identical or different substituents selected from alkyl or alkoxy groups having up to 4 carbon atoms and halogen atoms; and D represents a divalent aliphatic, aryl or aromatic-heterocyclic or aryl-aliphatic radical conjugated with the rings to which it is attached. The compounds of the invention are used as optical brighteners. The benzofuran derivatives may be prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid derivative of the general formula with a carboxylic acid derivative of the general formula in which formulae A, B, D, R<SP>01</SP> and R<SP>02</SP> are defined as above and one of the symbols Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>2</SP> represents a halogen atom and the other symbol Z<SP>1</SP> or Z<SP>2</SP> represents the group -NH-NH 2 , in an inert organic diluent, optionally with the use of an acid acceptor, e.g. a tertiary amine at a temperature of 20 to 220 C. and preferably in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 to give a diacylhydrazide of the formula in which A, B, D, R<SP>01</SP> and R<SP>02</SP> are defined as above and then subsequently splitting off water to give the compound of general Formula I.
