Abstract

1455936 Lubricant composition DOW CORNING CORP 28 Aug 1974 [24 June 1974 37580/74 Headings C3P and C3T [Also in Division C5] A composition for forming a dry lubricant coating on surfaces to be lubricated comprises an intimate mixture of a particulate solid lubricant and film-forming carrier. This carrier consists essentially of a dispersion of colloidal silica in a solution in a mixture of water and a lower aliphatic alcohol of a partial condensate of a silanol, and enough acid to provide a pH of 3-0 to 6À0. The silanol is of the formula where R is alkyl (up to propyl), vinyl, 3,3,3- trifluoropropyl, gamma - glycidoxypropyl or gamma - methacryloxypropyl, but at least 70% (weight) is CH 3 Si(OH) 3 . The partial condensate amounts to 25 to 90% (weight) of total solids, and the total solids to 10 to 50% (weight) of the carrier. The solid lubricant may be graphite, an oxide of Mg. Sb, Bi or Pb, a sulphide of Mo. W, Ti Zr or Pb, a selenide of Mo or W, boron nitride, calcium fluoride or colloidal silver, PTFE, polytrifluorochlorethylene, nylon, a polymer or copolymer of propylene, a polyimide, poly-(paraoxybenzoyl), or a mixture of these. The silanols may be formed in situ by hydrolysis of the corresponding trialkoxysilanes, which simultaneously provides at least part of the alcohol needed. Suitable acids are hydrochloric, acetic, chloracetic, citric, benzoic, dimethylmalonic, formic, glutaric, glycollic, maleic, malonic, toluenesulphonic and oxalic. Condensation catalysts, preferably buffered, may be added to the composition. Examples are potassium formate, dimethylamine acetate, ethanolamine acetate, dimethylaniline formate, tetraethylammonium benzoate, sodium acetate, sodium propionate, sodium formate and benzyltrimethylammonium acetate. Some of these too may be formed in situ by reaction between the acid and free alkali in the colloidal silica. Conventional additives may also be present, e.g, carboxymethylcellulose, corrosion inhibitors. dyes and oxidation inhibitors.
