Abstract
1455908 Gettering SAES GETTERS SpA 17 Jan 1974 [18 Jan 1973] 02190/74 Heading H1D A getter device comprises a metallic structure with interconnected cells filled at least in part with particulate getter material, and has at least one attachment zone integral with the structure and consisting of compressed zones of the structure. As shown in Fig. 2, a strip of spongiform metal is compressed as by a press (Fig. 3, not shown) at areas 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> etc., leaving uncompressed portions 11, 12 etc. between them, the transition between the compressed and uncompressed portions being gradual. Where the strip is thicker, it is cut as well as compressed. The uncompressed areas may have various forms, which are described, and they may be detached from the strip except for a tab of compressed material. Getter powder may be flowed into the cells, or it may be suspended in a liquid in which the structure is immersed. As shown in Fig. 19, a strip 190 of spongy structures 191, 1911 etc. joined by intermediate compressed portions 192, 192<SP>1</SP> etc. is engaged by a toothed wheel 195 which rotates to move the strip 190 through a liquid suspension 194 of a powdered getter in a bath 193. From the bath the strip 190 passes through a drying oven 197 after which it is coiled, or it may be heated in a vacuum furnace. Suitable metals for the structure are Ni, Cr, Fe, Ti, Co, Mo and their alloys. The structure may be formed as described in Specifications 1,263,704 and 1,289,690, or in U.S.A. Specification 3,679,552, the size of the passages being between <SP>1</SP>/ 125 -<SP>1</SP>/ 10 inch, and preferably <SP>1</SP>/ 100 - <SP>1</SP>/ 25 inch. Getter materials may be evaporating materials such as Ca, Sr, Mg or preferably Ba; or non-evaporating materials such as Hf, U, Ti, Zr, Th, V, Ta, Nb, W and their alloys, particularly with Al, Co, Mn or misch metall. The getter material may be mixed with an antisintering agent, e.g. graphite or a particulate Zn-Al alloy, or refractory oxides or carbides.
