1455733 Pulse code modulation-to-delta modulation conversion PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 22584/74 Heading H3H To convert P.C.M. words X(nT) having a word rate f 1 (e.g. 8 kHz) to delta modulation 12 having a word rate f 2 (e.g. single bit words, bit rate 64 kHz) a digital filter 1 comprising a shift register 25 clocked at f 2 , multipliers 26 and an accumulator 4 produces words Y at f 2 consisting. of the P.C.M. words at f 1 with interpolated words spaced at intervals 1/f 2 therebetween, and a delta modulator 5 generates an output word at 12 according to the difference between each word Y and the count in a counter 18, incremented or decremented in accordance with the result of the comparison. As shown the output 12 is 1 or 0 according the plurality of the difference between the signals fed to comparator 9 and counter 18 is adjusted by 1. In modifications, Fig. 2 (not shown), a recursive filter (28) is used including an additional accumulator (39) at the input to the shift register receiving input from the various stages of the shift register via additional multipliers (40). The delta modulator may have dynamic compression the number by which the counter (18) is incremented or decremented being adjustable according to the number of consecutive 1's or 0's in the output 12. Delta sigma and differential P.C.M. may also be used.
