Abstract

1455714 Moulding foamed packaging ALTA INDUSTRIES Inc 26 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 54749/73 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B8 and C3] A loose fill packing material consists of elements comprising a foamed thermoplastic body having a closed-cell outer surface and an open-celled interior, the body having hemispherical convex and concave surfaces, the concave surface being eccentric to and intersecting the convex surface and is made by extruding a melt of an expandable thermoplastic polymer through a die orifice to produce a protruding mass bonded by a convex surface and periodically cutting the extrudate while it is still molten to provide a plurality of expandable elements which are then expanded, e.g. by subjection to steam in two stages. The expanded elements may be of a hollow shape (Fig. 4) and may be made by feeding expandable polystyrene beads from a hopper 12 (Fig. 1) into an extruder 16 from which molten material is forced out of orifice 24 and the melt is continuously divided by a revolving cutter 26. The cut sections expand while falling into a hopper 28 from which they are conveyed by a blower fan 32 to storage container 36. Preferably the expanded elements are post-expanded in a unit 42 wherein the elements are deposited on a moving conveyer (a perforated plate, 126) in a steam atmosphere and the further expanded elements are then conveyed to a storage container 44 by a blower 142. Fig. 6 shows the internal construction of the above extruder and cutter; extruder screw 56 is connected for rotation to gear reduction unit 22 and housing 50 is cooled by water circulating through chamber 58 from feed conduit 60 into drain 62; a cooling conduit is coiled helically about barrel 18 and is also supplied from conduit 60, which also supplies a second cooling conduit 86. Electrical heaters 90 and 92, and 98 heat the extruder barrel and die respectively. Cutter wheel 100 is mounted on the shaft of an electric motor 104 and includes a pair of opposing circular flange portions 106 joined to hub 108 and having removably mounted blades 110.
