Abstract

1455404 Spray producers ATLAS COPCO AB 19 April 1974 [19 April 1973 4 Oot 1973] 17387/74 Heading B2F An electrostatic spray gun for discharging liquid paint which is dispersed by air streams, comprises a nozzle 18 through which paint is emitted through a discharge orifice 25 controlled by a manually operable valve comprising an axially movable electrically insulating rod 32 cooperating with a seat 34 in the nozzle 18, the nozzle 18 comprising a substantially non- conductive matrix, e.g. PTFE plastics, in which there are embedded electrically conductive particles, e.g. bronze or graphite, which form the electrodes of the spray gun, the nozzle 18 being connected to a high voltage source via screws 43, 42 and an impedance 41. The forwardly extending end 22 of nozzle 18 forms an annular surface 26 surrounding the discharge orifice and, in conjunction with a coaxial air nozzle 17, forms an annular gap 24 therebetween. Air is emitted through the gap 24 and through holes 27 in the nozzle 17 to atomize the paint, the spray being flattened by air emitted from passages 30 in air horns 31. The supply of air is simultaneously controlled on reciprocation of the rod 32 by means of a valve (not shown), the air valve and the rod 32 being simultaneously operated by a trigger (46), Figure 1, (not shown). The nozzle 18 is of sintered material and is machined after sintering to obtain the electrodes on its surface. In another embodiment, Figures 3, 4 (not shown), a sintered paint nozzle (55) is partially enclosed within an outer non-conducting member (56), the air in this embodiment not being carried along the surface of the paint nozzle (55) but along the member (56), to reduce the risk of sparking. One or more needle electrodes (58), projecting forwardly from the discharge orifice 25, may be provided, the electrode(s) (58) being retained between the nozzle (55) and member (56). The nozzle (55) and member (56) are press-fittted together. The electrode(s) (58) further reduce the risk of spanking since they form corona discharges instead of sparks. The invention may also be applied to an airless spray-gun or a powder spray-gun.
