1455264 Cross-linking elastomers COSIDKAUTASIT-WERKE VEB 8 Aug 1973 37650/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] In a process for the production of moulded articles, e.g. sealing elements, from elastomeric material, the elastomer is cross-linked whilst in the mould by irradiation with X-ray bremsstrahlung produced by passage of an electron beam either through a metal foil, or if the mould is of metal, through the mould. In the examples, (i) a silicone rubber lip seal is injection moulded and irradiated whilst the mould with X-ray bremsstrahlung produced by conversion of an electron beam with a lead foil of 5 mm. thickness, the moulded seal being grafted with acrylonitrile after removal from the mould, by heating the seals at 60‹ C. in acrylonitrile vapour, (ii) a lip seal is injection moulded from butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer and cross-linked as in (i), the seal being exposed to local electron radiation after removal from the mould to increase the hardness of selected areas.
