Abstract

1455195 Alpha-numeric displays TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 18 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973 31 Jan 1973 (2)] 02433/74 Addition to 1440274 Heading G5C [Also in Division H1] A display device comprises an array of LEDs 19 on a substrate 11 with the junctions 17 perpendicular to the substrate, the faces 19a, 19b of the diodes parallel to the junctions being coated with light reflecting material 22, 23 to increase optical efficiency. GaP LEDs include heavily doped regions 20, 21 covering all or part of the faces 19a, 19b. The LEDs are bonded with adhesive 18 to the substrate on which conductive patterns 24, 25 are printed. The electrodes are connected via the layers 22, 23 to the patterns by solder 26, 27. Layers 22, 23 may be of Au alloys, e.g. containing 1-2% Si and 0À3-1% Be respectively. Other materials may be Au-Zn alloy, Ag, Al, Ni or Pt. The layers may be of different colours or have different shaped holes to distinguish the P and N regions. The outer surface of the layers may be undulating. The device may include a plurality of figure-of-eight arrays of LEDs. A housing which may be coloured extends over the arrays.
