Abstract

1455176 Jointing STANDARD PRESSED STEEL CO 22 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 12952/74 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] In a method of assembling and preloading a joint comprising a number of workpieces 12, 14 held together by clinching a collar 40 on to a ribbed, threaded, or knurled portion 32 of the shank 18 of a headed pin 20, the collar initially having a smooth bore 44, an external end flange 50 to abut one workpiece 14, a portion 52 of smaller external diameter than the flange 50, and a portion 54 of smaller diameter than the portion 52, the pin is inserted through aligned bores in the workpieces, the collar 40 is slipped on to its projecting end, an abutment 38 is engaged with the projecting end 36 of the pin to abut the free end of the collar 40 and is used to take up slack in the joint, the collar is clinched on to the shank portion 32 to lock on to it and to preload the joint by elongating the pin shank, and the abutment 38 is removed. Preferably the pin shank 18 is an interference fit with the bores through the workpieces 12, 14. The collar 40 is counterbored at 46 to clear the plain portion of the pin shank. The abutment 38 is a tubular portion of the clinching tool 56, which can be screwed on to the threaded end portion 36 of the pin shank to abut the collar to take up play in the joint prior to clinching
