Abstract
1455024 Confining and removing waste products in industrial processes RUHRKOHLE AG 13 Nov 1973 [22 Nov 1972 7 Dec 1972 9 Aug 1973] 52552/73 Heading F4X A shed 204 mounted at the discharge side of a coke oven battery 201 comprises a roof 207 upwardly extending from the coke oven battery and a shed side wall spaced from the coke discharge side of the battery, a dust and gas extraction system 209 being provided adjacent the highest point of the shed roof. Adjustable flaps (e.g. 22, 23, Fig. 1) control the air supply to the shed space. The invention also comprises an arrangement and method in which the dust and gas laden air extracted from the shed (e.g. via a line 210) is scrubbed with water (e.g. in a vertical scrubber 213) before passing to the one or more blowers 233 of the extraction system. As shown in Fig. 6, the scrubbing tower 213 comprises nozzles 215 and 216 supplied with water from a vessel 218. At the upper level, the nozzles 215 provide an atomized water spray to saturate the dust and gas laden air entering the scrubber at 214. At the lower level larger dust &c particles are extracted from the air/gas by water droplets of relatively high density produced by nozzles 216. The scrubbed air/gas after passing through a cyclone 232, is discharged to atmosphere (via the one or more blowers 233) at 234. The scrubbing water after passing through a settling tank 220 is recirculated to the vessel 218 which serves also the water sprays of a coke-quenching tower 219. The dust &c extraction systems of several sheds may be interconnected (Fig. 4). The shed space may also receive oven gases collected as the ovens are being recharged from a filling truck with a plurality of hoppers 145, (Fig. 5), the said gases being discharged (at 151) into the shed space via a suction line (146) and a steam injector (149).
