Abstract

1454809 Production of reducing gas TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 23 Oct 1974 45944/74 Heading C5E In a process for the production of a reducing gas (comprising principally H 2 and CO) by the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous fuel with a free oxygen containing gas in the reaction zone of a free flow gas generator, NH 3 is added to the reaction zone as a temperature moderator in an amount 0À01-1À5 lbs. NH 3 per lb. of hydrocarbonaceous fuel, and no H 2 O is introduced into the reaction zone other than that produced therein. The ammonia is introduced in liquid or vaporized anhydrous state, either separate from or admixture with the fuel. The reaction is carried out at an autogeneous temperature of 1500-3500 ‹F. and a pressure of 1-350 atm. A variety of hydrocarbon fuels may be employed, including solid, liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons, oxygenated organic material, slurries of carbonaceous fuels in liquid hydrocarbons, gas-solid suspensions and gasliquid-solid suspensions. Many examples of suitable compounds are given. Various treatments may be applied to the effluent gas, e.g. cooling, by passage through a waste heat boiler, to temperatures of 400-2300‹ F., and cleaning and purification operations such as scrubbing to remove suspended solids and removal of gaseous impurities by physical or chemical absorption or refrigeration. In particular, the effluent gas may be scrubbed, with a liquid hydrocarbon to produce a slurry of particulate carbon which may be suitably concentrated and recycled to the gas generator.
