Abstract

145,446. Brigham, A. A. Dec. 30, 1915, [Convention date]. Splicing.- Apparatus for use in the splicing of threads or other materials composed of strands comprises two opposed twisting heads 2, 3 mounted in axial alinement on a baseplate. Each head comprises a hollow spindle provided at one side of its bearing 8 with a long pinion 10 and at the other end with a knurled sleeve 12. The thread is inserted through slots in the pinion, sleeve and spindle and is clamped by a screw 16. The spindles are rotated through a definite number of revolutions corresponding to the number of twists to be removed by hand gears 22 which travel along screwed spindles 18 between adjustable, lock-nuts 24, 26. The spools, &c. of thread are supported on pivoted arms 28 and the thread is passed through guides 30, the free end being held in adjustable clamps 32. When the end is untwisted by rotation of the gear 22 the separated strands b are secured in the brushes 50, 51. The free ends of two strands are then twisted together between the fingers of the operative and the joined strand is stretched across the face of a pivoted curved plate 36. The face of the plate is vertical and is provided with a shallow groove. The plate is adjustably secured to a rocker-arm controlled by a spring 46 and moving between adjustable stops. Each pair of strands is twisted and stretched across the plate 36, the joinings being arranged at different points along the plate to avoid a bulky splice. The heads are now rotated in the reverse directions to replace the twist in the thread, this action causes the thread to shorten and to rock the plate 36 until the thread slips off the plate. The spliced section is then removed from the heads and stretched between supports 53, 54 the ends being trimmed and the splice dressed with wax, starch, &c. The support 54 comprises a notched disk 56 carried by a weighted arm which tends to tension the thread when it is secured in the notch and the arm freed.
