Abstract

1454259 Polyelectrolyte compositions for water treatment ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 12 Oct 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47322/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Compositions suitable for use in the treatment of water comprise an intimate mixture (i.e. a mixture wherein all the discrete particles each contain all the components of the mixture) of (a) a polyelectrolyte which is a water-soluble polymer or copolymer containing carboxyl groups (or salts thereof) having repeating units derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (b) at least one water-soluble compound which is a tripolyphosphate, pyrophosphate, orthophosphate, carbonate, sulphate or sulphite, in the substantial absence of a surfaceactive agent or a nitrite. The compositions may additionally include (in intimate or non-intimate admixture) glassy polyphosphates, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate, or other sodium phosphates or other sodium salts, as well as antifoams such as polymerized esters, alcohols or amines, or polysiloxanes. Polyelectrolyte (a) is suitably a polymer or copolymer of acrylic, methaorylic, maleic or fumaric acid or salts thereof; exemplified is sodium polyacrylate. The intimate mixtures can be prepared by drying droplets of an aqueous solution of the polyelectrolyte and water-soluble compound, the drying being effected in a non-oxidizing atmosphere when the solution contains sulphite; drying procedures include spray-drying and fluidized-bed drying. Water-treatments include control of scaling or corrosion in heating or power (turbine) boilers and in cooling water systems; and treatments in desalination plants.
