Abstract

1454115 Seaming non-metallic sheet material V FLAX 18 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973] 02532/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A tubular body is formed by wrapping a laminated sheet having outer thermoplastic layers 3, 3a around a mandrel 4 formed with a longitudinal groove therein and having heating means 7 therein, edges 5, 6 of the sheet overlapping in the region of and along the length of the groove, and applying pressure to the overlapping edges 5, 6 by a pressure head 8 having a working surface 35 shaped to the desired peripheral shape of the tubular body. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the sheet comprises an aluminium layer 2 sandwiched between two thermoplastic layers or coatings 3, 3A. The heating means 7 comprises an electrical resistance element in the form of strip which defines two longitudinal grooves 32 in which thermoplastic material flows during bonding of the edges 5, 6. The face 35 of the head 8 is provided by a flexible sheet 36 of hard material, e.g. sheet metal, and a resilient backing member 10. A plastics closure member 73, Fig. 4, having a frusto-conical collar 74 and an externally screw-threaded neck 75 is push-fitted into the tubular body 1 so that the collar periphery engages the body interior at a short distance below the adjacent free end thereof. A rotatable mandrel 77 is inserted in the body 1 and coacts with a non-rotatable tool 78 to inturn the free end 79 of the body 1. The mandrel 77 is rotated to spin weld the member 73 to the body 1, thermoplastic material flowing into an annular recess 80 in the tool 78 to form an annular rib (81), Fig. 5 (not shown).
