Abstract
1453815 Self-powered electrolysis ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE SERVICE NATIONAL 11 March 1975 [12 June 1974] 10184/75 Heading C7B In an electrolytic process which produces an element, the element is combined exothermically with a reactive body, at least part of the heat thereby released being used to generate electricity which is used at least in part to effect the electrolysis. In the Figure, water, (rendered conductive) is electrolyzed using a porous anode 3 and cathode 2. Molten Na passes behind the cathode and reacts with evolved H 2 giving NaH, while a stream of liquid or fluidized BaO passes behind the anode and reacts with evolved O 2 giving BaO 2 . The heat thus generated is passed via exchanger 5 to turbine 6 which drives alternator A, which in turn drives the cell via voltage reducer-rectifier 9, 10, as well as providing excess electricity. Incoming water to the cell is warmed by exchanger 7 associated with the turbine. Alternatively only that amount of electricity required by the cell is generated, remaining heat being used as such.
