Abstract

1453793 Sparking-plugs; ignition systems BRUNSWICK CORP 10 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 01252/74 Heading F1B A mechanically distributorless ignition system includes an ignition coil 25 and a sparking-plug 27 having a centre electrode assembly which includes in series therewith a filter element 1 for suppressing radio frequency interference, the filter element being an inductor, the impedance of the filter element being arranged to be, in the frequency range which the filter is to suppress, substantially inductive and the inductor being substantially enclosed within the sparking-plug insulator 6. The invention also comprises a sparking-plug in which the inductance of the inductor is 100 microhenries or less. As shown the ignition system is of capacitor discharge type and includes an alternator 20 which charges a capacitor 22, and an electronic switch 23. The sparking-plug suppressor is constructed by wrapping a coil 8 of fine wire tightly about a non-magnetic high dielectric strength core 9. The opposite ends of the coil are connected to conductive end caps 10 and 11. The first few windings of the coil 8 nearer the plug spark gap may be more widely spaced than the remainder of the windings.
