Abstract

1453762 Triethanolamine BASF AG 15 Feb 1974 [17 Feb 1973] 6906/74 Heading C2C Triethanolamine is made by reacting monoethanolamine and/or diethanolamine with ethylene oxide in the liquid phase in the substantial absence of water and ammonia, from 0À8 to 1À1 moles of ethylene oxide being used per gram atom of hydrogen combined with nitrogen and wherein the reaction is carried out for at least part of the time but not for a total of more than two hours at a temperature of from 110-180‹ C. The temperature at the beginning of the reaction may be not more than 100‹ C. and may be raised later to 110-180‹ C. The reaction may be effected (a) by a batch process in a stirred reactor vessels provided with an after-reactor or in a cascade of stirred vessels only the last of which is provided with an after-reactor or (b) by a continuous process in which the reaction mixture is circulated under pressure by a gear pump through two heated jackets and finally through an after-reactor or in a cascade of such reactors except that the after-reactor is omitted from all but the last stage.
