Abstract

1453653 Spark discharge apparatus P VAN LEEUWEN 24 July 1974 [31 July 1973] 32686/74 Heading B5B An apparatus for roughening plastic film or sheet by spark discharge comprises a box-like casing formed by a lower trough 1 and an upper trough 2 hinged at 3 supports within 1 a roller type earthed electrode 4 and within 2 a high tension knife electrode 5 on insulators 11 and 12. The rim of 1 ahead and behind 4 is recessed or cut-out to provide slots 6 through which the web or sheet material to be processed may be led in and out. The slots are such that when closed the operator may not touch the electrodes. The high tension supply connection comprises a contact member 8 on 2 connected to 5 which contact member mates with a cooperating contact member 9 in 1. Thus when the box-like casing is open to feed in the web or sheet, 5 is disconnected from its supply, 9 is set down in a recess 10 to avoid contact by the operator. The web or sheet is passed over guide rollers 15 or 16 in contact with roller 4 provided with a plastics sheath 13 to roughen one side only. Vertical adjustment of rollers 15 and 16 enables the web or sheet to travel between 4 and 5 without making contact with 4 and to be roughened on both sides.
