Abstract

1453166 Cross-linkable polyethylene composition RHONE-POULENC SA 23 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 37207/74 Heading C3P Crosslinkable polyethylene compositions are prepared by a process which comprises preparing a master mix by dissolving 3 to 10 parts of an organic peroxide, 0À5 to 1 part of an antioxidant and optionally 1 to 5 parts of ultra violet light stabilizer in a solvent which exerts slight swelling effect of polyethylene in the cold, adding this solution to 100 parts of powdered high density polyethylene in a high-speed mixer and, after the mixture has become homogeneous, removing the solvent therefrom at a temperature not exceeding 80‹ C., and mixing 5 to 15 parts of the resulting master mix with 100 parts of powdered high density polyethylene, all parts being by weight. The compositions may be used for rotational moulding. The peroxide may be 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - di - (t - butylperoxy)-hexane or -hexyne-3, or 1,3-bis(tbutylperoxyisopropyl)benzene. The antioxidant may be trimethyl dihydroquinoline or 2,2 - bis thio diethyl bis[3 - (3,5 - di - t - butyl- 4 - hydroxyphenyl)propionate]. The u.v. stabilizer may be 2-hydroxy-4-n-octoxybenzophenone. The solvent may be cyclohexane, toluene or p-xylene.
