Abstract

1453052 Conversion of rubber latex to powder BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 14 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 4044/73 Heading C3P A process for converting rubber latex to powder comprises coagulating the latex, passing the coagulated latex through a high shear mixing device which comprises a stationary perforated member and a moving member cooperating therewith to cause movement of the material to be milled, through the perforations in the stationary member, separating the resulting mixture of powdered rubber, and water, and drying the powdered rubber. Preferably, the stationary perforated member is a cylinder having perforations in its walls and the cooperating moving member is a rapidly rotating rotor capable of drawing the coagulated latex into the cylinder and expelling it through the perforations. Drying is preferably effected by fluidization of the powdered rubber in hot air. Examples of rubber latices which may be treated are copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile, and butadiene and styrene.
