Abstract

1453013 Pipe coating apparatus CFS CORP 5 March 1974 9833/74 Heading F2P [Also in Division D1] In an apparatus for simultaneously applying to a long cylindrical object, e.g. a conduit, a coating and a tubular film wrapping to retain the coating thereon a conduit 14 passes, on rollers 12, through a cylindrical mandrel 16 concentric with and spaced from the conduit where it is coated by injecting coating material 64 into the annular space 28 between conduit 14 and mandrel 16. Simultaneously a strip of film 34, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene film taken from a roll 32 over rollers 36, 37, 38 and transverse roller 40 passes in the direction of travel of the pipe, through a folder 42, e.g. a simple frusto-conical cylinder surrounding the mandrel, which wraps the film around the outside of the mandrel with the film edges overlapping, the overlapping process being assisted by a cylindrical leaf extension 50 of the folder 42. Alternatively the film strip (shown by dashed line 34<SP>1</SP>) can be wound around rollers 37<SP>1</SP>, 38<SP>1</SP> and then into folder 42 which would then be a reversing folder. The edges are held together by spring elements 52 and sealed by a heated roller 54 that presses the edges against the mandrel. After the film cylinder 62 leaves the mandrel the coating material 64 that has passed through space 28 enters the annular space between the film cylinder 62 and conduit 14 at point 63. The apparatus is mounted on a frame 10 which is adapted to support or be supported by the conduit and be axially movable relative to the conduit, e.g. by power driven rollers 12. If a heat shrinkable film is used it may be shrunk tightly over the coating by irradiating it with heating means (86), Fig. 5 (not shown). The coating may be a foamed plastics material which may be chemically generated within the annular space 28. The apparatus may be used in a similar manner to coat rods, wires and cables.
