Abstract

1452970 Removing SO 2 ; sulphur EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 31 Dec 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 60280/73 Heading C1A A process for converting to elemental sulphur the sulphur dioxide in the sulphur dioxide-rich regeneration off-gas stream obtained from a flue gas desulphurization plant comprises: continuously introducing a hydrogen-rich reducing gas stream and at least part of said sulphurdioxide-rich gas stream into a thermal reactor; thermally (i.e. non-catalytically) reacting said gas streams at a temperature in excess of 650‹ C. in said thermal reactor to produce a process gas stream containing elemental sulphur, hydrogen sulphide and unreacted sulphur dioxide; cooling said process gas stream to condense elemental sulphur therefrom; introducing said process gas stream together with the remaining part (if any) of the sulphurdioxide-rich gas stream into a catalytic converter, the gases entering said catalytic converter having an H 2 S/SO 2 mole ratio of about 2/1; and therein catalytically converting the hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in said process gas stream to elemental sulphur, cooling the gas stream, and removing condensed elemental sulphur therefrom. The mole ratio of hydrogen sulphide to sulphur dioxide in the process gas stream is maintained at substantially 2 : 1 by suitable adjustment of the flow of the reducing gas. Preferably, the mole ratio of reductant to sulphur dioxide in the feed gas streams is approximately 2 : 1; the feed gases are preheated to result in a reaction temperature in the thermal reactor of at least 650‹ C. which temperature is then maintained without the addition of extraneous heat; the catalytic conversion stage is carried out in a series of catalytic converters; and the feed of reducing gas to the thermal reactor is controlled in accordance with the mole ratio of hydrogen sulphide to sulphur dioxide in the effluent gas from the last catalytic converter.
