1452896 Chromatography; emulsions NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 3 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972 17 Oct 1973] 59091/72 and 48298/73 Headings B1H and B1V [Also in Division C1] A method for the production of particulate materials suitable for use in chromatography comprises disposing as the disperse phase of an emulsion, either particles of liquid or solid bodies which are individually enclosed by envelopes of liquid, there being dissolved or dispersed in the liquid of the disperse phase a chromatographic stationery phase material or a material capable of acting as a support therefor, or a substance from which either of said materials can be derived, and treating the emulsion so as to convert the disperse phase into solid form. The solid bodies forming cords for the liquid particles may be of glass ceramic metal or a polymer. The chromatographic material may be silica, alumina, titania, zirconia, a silicate or a polymer; or a precursor such as a solution of sodium silicate or aluminium sulphate, or a polymerisable monomer. Conversion to solid form may be by inclusion of a gelling agent, by freezing or by polymerisation. When packed in a steel column and treated with # #' oxydipropionitrile good chromatographic separations of phenols are obtained.
