Abstract

1452682 Burners WALTER KIDDE & CO INC 4 March 1974 [12 March 1973] 9666/74 Heading F4T A control circuit for a fuel burner has an electrical energy store means for receiving and storing energy from a source, an energy transfer means responsive to a burner flame detector for transferring energy in the store means to valve means controlling the supply of burner fuel and limit means for preventing sufficient energy from flowing from the source directly to the valve means to actuate it during normal operation. In the circuit energisation of a coil 49 opens the control valve. Coil 49 is connected to an isolation diode 52 and is parallelled by a capacitor 51 and a pulse responsive resistor 53. During positive halfcycles of the source line 44 relative line 41 an energy store capacitor 54 and a spark capacitor 57 are charged via primary winding 61 of a spark transformer 31. When a flame is present on the burner 47 the flame detecting circuit 35 provides a sufficient charge on the capacitor 73 due to the firing of SCR 71 to cause SCR 36 to fire each half cycle which discharges a delay capacitor 22 so that sufficient charge cannot be built up to fire a SCR 24. Firing of the latter causes the valve to open and a spark at the transformer 31 to ignite the burner, which spark is caused on each absence of the flame. Firing of the SCR 36 maintains the valve open due to the discharge of capacitors 54, 57 therethrough. If a flame is not established a delay capacitor 95 is charged and after storing sufficient energy fires a threshold neon bulb 101 which causes SCR 99 to conduct and a drop across resistor 83 so that SCR 24 conducts in a shut-down mode and lock out thermal circuit breaker 45 opens. Bimetallic member 33 also causes shut-down after a predetermined :time if SCR 24 keeps firing due to a flame not being detected. Modifications of the valve control circuit are described (see Figs. 4-6 not shown).
