1451962 Coatings DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 18 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 48713/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Metallic surfaces are given improved corrosion resistance and oxidic, metallic or other inorganic surfaces are given improved adhesion to organic polymers by treating the surface with a silane or a solution of a silane of the formula wherein n is an integer of from 1 to 8, x is an integer of from 1 to 4, p is 1, 2 or 3, R denotes H or a C 1-4 aliphatic radical, R denote C 1-6 alkyl or C 1-6 alkoxyalkyl and R" denotes alkyl, chloroalkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted by one or more -Cl, -C 1-4 alkyl, -C 1-4 alkoxy, -NO 2 or -NH 2 groups. The surfaces may either by treated directly with the silane or silane solution, or the silane may first be incorporated into the organic polymer which is then used to subsequently coat the surface. Exemplified surfaces are glass, quartz, diatomaceous earth, sand, asbestos, mica, corundum, iron oxides, calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, iron, copper, zinc, aluminium, tin and titanium. The substrates may be in the form of fibres, nonwoven fabrics, rovings, powders, mats, woven fabrics, sheets and wires. In Examples (1) glass fibres are coated with a 0.5% solution of N-(gamma-triethoxysilylpropyl) -para-toluene sulphonamide in trichlorethane and subsequently with an epoxy resin; (2) glass panes are dipped in a- 2% solution of N-(gamma-triethoxysilylpropyl)- methane sulphonamide in isopropanol and are subsequently coated with a 7.5% solution of styrene-butadiene copolymer in methylisobutyl ketane; and (3) N-(gamma - triethoxysilylpropyl)-para-chlorobenzene sulphonamide is mixed with a 7.5% solution of a styrene-butadiene copolymer in methylisobutyl ketane and subsequently coated on to glass panels.
