Abstract
1451869 Pipe couplings BERG KG 4 Sept 1974 [16 May 1974 18 July 1974] 38592/74 Heading F2G A connector element for connecting two heat radiator panels 20 with a common feed or return pipe comprises a hollow spherical body 10 made by welding together two identical shells 11 and having two mutually opposed cylindrical stub outlets 13 extending outwardly from body 10 the ends of which are respectively welded to radiator panels 20 and an internally screw threaded pipe coupling socket 12 welded at one end to the planar rim 15 of a hole cut in body 10 and connected at the other end to the feed or return line. Supporting rings 21 within each panel 20 enable a welded connection between stub outlets 13 and respective panels 20 to be achieved in a single step by a pressure welding process. In another embodiment a connector element for connecting a single radiator panel to a feed or return pipe has a spherical body formed by welding together two dissimilar shells and is provided with a pipe coupling socket and a single stub outlet for welding to the radiator panel, the connector having a flattened portion diametrically opposite the stub outlet to reduce the size of the connector and hence reducing the space required between the panel and an adjacent wall. In yet other embodiments the stub outlet or outlets may be inwardly extending to provide a connector having a smaller overall diameter. The connector elements may be made by a method comprising the steps of forming a circular sheet metal blank; deep drawing the blank to form a cup shape; swaging the rims of the cup inwardly to produce a spherical shape with a circular opening therein; cutting a further circular opening in the spherical body and welding one end of a pipe coupling socket to the further opening. A connector having two diametrically opposed circular openings therein is formed from a tubular blank by swaging the end portions of the blank inwardly to form a spherical body with two holes diametrically opposed; cutting a third circular hole in the body and welding a pipe socket to the rim of the third hole. The connector element shown in Fig. 6 may be made from two circular blanks each of which has a central circular hole therethrough by forming the blanks into hemispheres each having a stub outlet by a deep drawing process and then welding the rims, which may be chamfered, of the two hemispheres together to form a spherical body with two stub outlets and finally cutting a circular opening in the spherical body and welding e.g. by an electrical resistance welding method a pipe socket to the rim of the opening.
