Abstract
1451646 Hydropneumatic shock absorber TOKICO Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 59410/73 Heading F2S A hydropneumatic shock absorber comprises a cylinder 16 containing hydraulic liquid; a hollow piston rod 1 reciprocable with respect to and extending out of an open end of the cylinder; a free piston 6 within the piston rod 1 and partitioning the interior 2 into a liquid chamber 4, which communicates through a resisting-force generating means 18, 11 with the interior 24 of the cylinder 16, and a gas chamber 8; first and second pistons 10, 14, mounted rigidly on the piston rod 2, the second piston 14 having a seal member 15 for sealing the interior 24 of the cylinder 16 from the atmosphere; and a relief opening 19 in the inner surface of the cylinder 16 and having one end thereof open in the vicinity of the seal member 15 at the atmosphere side thereof when the piston rod 1 is fully extended and having the other end thereof open at the open end of the cylinder 16 to atmosphere. During assembly of the shock absorber, the relief opening 19 allows a maximum amount of oil to escape before the sealing member 15 becomes effective, and final insertion is made of the piston rod 1 to allow a circlip 20 to be inserted. The effect is to maximise the working stroke of the free piston 6. The relief opening 19 may be an axial groove, Fig. 1(a), an enlarged diameter 19", Fig. 2 (not shown) or a combination of both, Figs. 3(a) and 3(b) (not shown).
