Abstract
1451314 Antiskid braking systems GIRLING Ltd 28 Nov 1973 [15 Dec 1972 31 March 1973 25 July 1973] 57887/72 15597/73 and 35393/73 Heading F2F In a master cylinder assembly with a modulating piston 3 for applying a force to a master cylinder piston 1 which generates or controls braking pressure and a pedal-operated booster valve assembly for supplying fluid to the side of the modulating piston 3 remote from the piston 1, a skid sensing means is operative to modulate the booster pressure to regulate the braking in skid conditions. In the construction shown, a pedal operated rod 20 advances a circular plate 21 initially to move it out of engagement with the stem of a tilting valve member 30 which then closes a port 32 leading to a reservoir 31. Further movement of plate 21 urges a valve head 23 away from a seating 24 so that high pressure fluid from an accumulator 28 passes via a port 27 and an axial passage 25 provided in an axial extension 17 of a piston 15, to a chamber 19. The fluid then passes via a passage 33 and a solenoid valve assembly to a chamber 16 where it acts on a modulator piston 3 to advance the latter. Advancement of piston 3 causes corresponding movement of a main piston 4 to close a valve 8 connected to a reservoir 7, whereafter fluid in a space 5 is pressurized and passed to hydraulic actuators through an outlet port 6. Upon detection of an incipient skid condition, a skid sensor 43 causes a solenoid 41 to be energized and advance an armature 40 to urge a ball 38 into engagement with seating 37 to cut off fluid supply to chamber 16 and place the latter in communication with a reservoir 31 thereby relieving the braking pressure. In another embodiment without the tilting valve member 30 a plate 21 is coupled to an axially dispaceable stem 44, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), carrying a valve head (45) for engaging a seat (46) at one end of a longitudinal bore (47) in the housing 1 connected to the reservoir 31. Three solenoid operated antiskid valve assemblies 35 are provided connected to pressure chamber 19 and respectively connected to three modulator pistons 3 arranged in three angularly spaced bores arranged on a constant diameter pitch circle diameter. Two pistons may be connected to the brakes on different front wheels and the other to both rear wheel brakes. In a modification of this embodiment, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), plate 21 comprises a piston having an axially extending skirt (50) for actuating a tilting valve assembly (53) connected to the accumulator. Each main piston 4 is of differential outline and each pressure space 5 is defined between a respective piston 4 and a plug (54) closing bore 2. The modulator pistons 3 are also stepped and a chamber 16 is located behind each of the pistons 3. In another construction three single master cylinders 81, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown), are bolted on to the booster part of the master cylinder assembly. Tandem master cylinders may be provided.
