Abstract

1451195 Bearings NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Nov 1973 [7 Nov 1972 9 April 1973] 51223/72 and 16830/73 Heading F2A A rotary bearing 6 comprises a first bearing member 7, 8, 9 and a second bearing member 3, the first bearing member comprising a support 9, at least three individual rigid bearing pads 7, and separate elastomeric mountings 8 bonded to and sandwiched between the rear face of each pad 7 and the support 9, the front face of each pad 7 co-operating with the second bearing member 3 to form bearing gaps whose shape may vary in use as the elastomeric mountings 8 distort and allow the pads 7 to tilt. Two first bearing members 7, 8 and 9 may be used with the second bearing member 2 to form a double-sided axial thrust bearing, Fig. 1. The support may be resiliently mounted by means of grommets 67, Fig. 6 (not shown), a ring of elastomer 68, Fig. 7 (not shown), or by a ball 74 and an elastomeric block 75 assembled with glue on the axis of rotation, the support 73 also resting in a notch 77 in a port 76. Figs. 5 and 7 (not shown) show the bearing used in conjunction with resiliently mounted bushes in textile spinning machines, Fig. 5 including an induction motor 30. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a mould suitable for casting silicone rubber 8 between the support 9 and a disc 16 of boro-silicate glass which subsequently is radially cut to form six bearing pads 7 and mountings 8 as Fig. 2 (not shown). An example is mentioned where a shaft of 0À6 inch diameter rotates at up to 120,000 r.p.m. against air-lubricated pads of boro-silicate glass with inner and outer radii of 0À312 and 0À625 inch respectively and carried on silicone rubber mountings 0À1 inch thick.
