Abstract
1451104 Heating block or graft copolymer dispersions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 June 1974 [12 March 1973] 11802/73 Addition to 1319448 Headings C3G and C3P A process for converting into a homogenous solid mass a concentrated fluid dispersion of spherical aggregates of an amphipathic block or graft copolymer in a hemi-solvent comprises the steps of (i) heating the concentrated dispersion, without significant charge in the concentration of the copolymer in the hemi-solvent, to a temperature above the environmental glass transition temperature of the components of the copolymer which are insoluble in the hemisolvent and (ii) subsequently cooling the resulting fluid composition to a temperature below the said transition temperature. In step (i) the dispersion is preferably heated to a temperature at least 100‹ C., above the said environmental glass temperature, or at least 100‹ C. above the bulk glass transition temperature of the said insoluble components of the copolymer. Examples are given in which dispersions prepared from a poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(12- hydroxystearic acid) graft copolymer and aliphatic hydrocarbons are heated and cooled, the heating and cooling, or the cooling only, being carried out in a mould.
