Abstract

1451095 Change-speed control CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 22 Oet 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 49312/73 Heading F2D A plurality of axially slidable gear selector rails are interlocked by a disc lying in a plane normal to the axes of the rails and movable in that plane, in response to selection movement of one rail, to a position preventing movement of the other rail or rails, and the rails are releasably held in their various positions by an encircling spring ring. The selection mechanism shown has a reverse selector rail 33, a first/ second ratio selector rail 34 and a third/fourth ratio selector rail 35 arranged in a triangle with their axes parallel, as shown in Fig. 1, and surrounding a disc 37, Fig. 5, which coacts with slots 38, 39 in the rails and is contained within a circular housing 41, 45 secured to a face 36 of the gear-box casing. The slots are so shaped that axial movement of any one rail displaces the disc laterally to lock the other two rails. The rails are located in their neutral and ratio-selected positions by a spring ring 46 coacting with slots 47, 48, 50, 52, 53. An axially movable and rotatable selector shaft 11, Fig. 3, has secured it to a lever 13 and a member 14 coacting with a bell-crank lever 17, 18 and a member 17a secured to a boss 19, Fig. 1, which is slidable on a fixed shaft 21, the arrangement being such that rotary movement of the shaft 11 displaces the assembly 17, 18, 17a, 19 along the shaft 21 to select a particular rail, and axial movement of the shaft 11 turns the bell-crank lever to actuate the selected rail. The assembly is biased by springs 25, 26 to the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the end 54 of the bell-crank lever engages a cut-out 55 in a plate 56 fixed to the rail 35. Displacement of the bell-crank lever against the spring 26 brings it into engagement with a slot 59 of a striker fork 58 fixed to the rail 34, and displacement against the stronger spring 25 causes the bell-crank lever to engage a slot 60 of the reverse rail 33 which has an operative connection with a reverse selector lever 27 rotatably mounted at 28 on the shaft 21. A reversing light switch is operated by a rod 62 coacting with the selector rail 33.
