Abstract
1450685 Testing lubricating fluid INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 17 March 1975 [16 Dec 1973] 38716/73 Heading G1S It is known that a critical oil film temperature exists above which a lubricant loses its ability to form complete surface films on bearing interfaces and allows metal to metal contact. The present invention determines this temperature and uses it as an indication of the load bearing capacity of the oil under test. The test apparatus comprises, metal test discs 10, 11 which are rotated in the same direction by shafting driven by gearing 25, 26, 27 from a motor driven belt 20, and a vertically movable casing 29 providing bearings for the gear 26 and disc 10, which casing is loaded by weights 31 attached thereto as that the discs 10, 11 press and slip against one another. A test liquid pressure vessel housing 32 is secured to a flange 14 by bolts and contains an electric heater 33. In operation, lubrication oil is ducted into the pressure vessel to immerse the discs 10, 11 which are rotated whilst the temperature of the oil is increased until scuffing of the discs is detected by a microphone, accelerometer or an electrical strain gauge torque meter mounted on the torque tube 19. The oil temperature is measured by a thermocouple at the onset of scuffing.
