Abstract

1450127 Flexible hose BF WHITWORTH 13 Nov 1974 [18 Aug 1973] 39152/73 Heading F2P A flexible hose comprises a base tube 10, reinforcing material 13 at least some of which is metallic in strip or filament form, and a cover tube 17; the hose parts being bonded together by the application of induction heating. The base tube and the cover tube are made of rubber or plastics materials (e.g. P.V.C., F.E.P., polyamides and polyesters); the reinforcing material, in a particular embodiment, comprises a series of wires 11 each embedded in a P.V.C. coating 12; typically a strip 13 of reinforcing material is formed from four coated wires 11 bonded together, Fig. 4. Otherwise, the reinforcing layer may comprise individually coated wires or groups of wires coated collectively, strip metal, or combinations of metallic wires or strips and filamentary textile materials. The reinforcing material may be wound on to the base tube in helical layers and may also comprise braided layers. In an embodiment, Fig. 2, base hose 10, supplied from reel 21 is covered with two oppositely wound helical layers 14, 15 of reinforcing strip 13 and then covered with a braiding 16 of the strip before an outer cover 17 of P.V.C. is extruded on to the hose and the assembled construction is passed through an induction coil such that the induced heating effect raises the coating 12 around the wires 11 to its melt temperature and thereby bonds the layers of the hose together.
