Abstract
1449690 Blasting A P HINMAN 21 May 1975 [6 June 1974] 25195/74 Heading B3D A method of cleaning a surface, such as the internal or external surface of a strip, comprises projecting on to the surface a stream of particles of crushed glass which is defined as glass in fragmenting form having sharp or jagged edges as opposed to glass beads. In one embodiment of apparatus for carrying out the method, crushed glass is supplied through a grading screen to a hopper 10 having a seal 14 which opens-to pass the glass into a container 12. Compressed air is fed by a pipe 16 to the container and to a delivery pipe 20 which is connected by a regulator valve 22 to the container and by a flexible hose 24 to a nozzle 26 controlled by a valve 28. In another embodiment, water from a storage tank 30 is supplied by a pump 32 to an inlet nozzle 34 of a suction device 36, the jet from the nozzle drawing crushed glass up a pipe 40 from a chamber 44 and conveying it through a flexible hose 46 to a gun 48. A similar arrangement to that shown in Fig. 2 may be used using- compressed air. In another embodiment, a vacuum blast machine may be used including a collector and filter for the used crushed glass and debris. The crushed glass may be produced by crushing waste glass, for example, bottles, in a gyratory or similar: crusher, the particle size ranging from a “ inch to fine sand size.
