Abstract

1449598 Composite boards; laminates G W WYNN Ltd 10 Aug 1973 [11 May 1972] 16647/72 Headings B5L and B5N [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A board or panel suitable for construction of external or partition walls or furniture comprises facing sheets 4, 6 between which are sandwiched a series of elongate members as 8 disposed with their longitudinal axes in the longitudinal direction of the panel and arranged asymmetrically laterally of the panel, the spacing of the members 8 being such that when portions of the facing sheets are removed to expose lateral faces of the members 8 two similar panels may be jointed together with interleaving of the members 8 the exposed lateral faces of which locate the panels against movement. Thus by dividing a panel as shown in Fig. 3 and disposing of portion 30 of the sheet 4 of the panel part 26, a concealed comb joint of the panel parts 26, 28 disposed at right angles may be formed, the outermost member 8 of one part entering the edge recess 10a of the other part, the projecting portion 32 of sheet 6 of part 26 being trimmed off. The edge recess 10a in the finished structure may be filled by a lipping (Fig. 5, not shown). As shown the sheets 4, 6 are adhered to the core members 8 by staggered bands 12, 14 of adhesive but different arrangements of adhesive may be provided while still allowing division of the panel in spaces between the adhesive areas, or readily releasable adhesives, e.g. thermoplastic may be used. Means indicating the position of the adhesive areas may be provided. To provide additional support to the facing sheets transverse stiffeners or removable infill materials may be provided, while facing sheets of low strength may be supplemented by reinforcing layers between them and the core members 8. The panel may be formed entirely of wood or wood products, or alternatively of plastics laminates and plastics core members, or of metal. Reference is made to form the core members integrally with the facing sheets, e.g. by extrusion.
