Abstract
1449528 Purification of waste water by ion exchange CARAPUS CO Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [5 Oct 1973 (2) 25 March 1974] 43185/74 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Detrimental heavy metals, (e.g. Hg, Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb) are removed from industrial waste water (e.g. in electrolytic processes, dyeing, pigment and polymer industries) by contact with a chelating polymer prepared by saponifying with acid or alkali a reaction product of a bisepoxide with a poly-N-substituted polyamine or poly-N-substituted polyalkylene imine, the amine or imine having been prepared by substituting an alkali metal salt or an alkyl ester of a carboxyalkyl group or cyanoalkyl group for active hydrogen atoms of the polyamine or imine to an extent that at least 2 active hydrogen atoms remain. In a typical example (1) the methyl ester of ethylenediamine di(methylpropionic acid) is reacted with the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and the product saponified with NaOH. Examples relate to the removal by ion-exchange of metal values from aqueous solutions of CuSO 4 , CdSO 4 , Pb(NO 3 ) 2 and HgCl 2 .
