Abstract

1449430 Grinding DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION Ltd 9 May 1975 [9 May 1974] 19716/75 Heading B3D A method of planing a stone body 10 having a generally flat but rough surface to produce a planed surface, such as a billiard table comprises abrasively cutting a kerf in the body on a plane underlying the rough surface, the portion 12 of the body between the kerf and rough surface being removed. The kerf is cut by a circular saw blade having a disc 3 which is secured to a backing 5 mounted on a substantially vertical spindle 6 and has an annular abrasive element or a series of arcuate elements of diamond grit in a bronze or cobalt matrix. The disc and backing are slightly dished and the plane of the blade is slightly inclined to the surface to be produced. The blade and its drive are mounted on a rail which bridges a pair of rails arranged one each side of the body, and means move the blade and its drive over the body to cut the kerf, the portion 12 between the kerf and the rough surface being broken away manually or automatically by a bevelled edge of the backing 5. The blade not only cuts the kerf but also face grinds the body to produce the planar surface. The method may also be applied to planing slate, black granite, terrazzo panels and other materials. A flexible pipe directs cooling and flushing fluid to the cutting edge of the blade.
