Abstract

1449360 Liquid cooled waveguide loads BIRD ELECTRONIC CORP 19 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 50103/74 Heading H1W A liquid-cooled dissipative load for a co-axial transmission comprises co-axial annular passages for passing liquid over the surface of a resistive inner conductor in one direction, and then in the reverse direction. As shown, coaxial terminals 23, 31 are respectively connected to a three-part housing 30, 31, 32 and to an inner conductor in the form of a dielectric tube 35 with an external resistive coating. The tube 35 is supported at one end by a conductive socket 44 attached to the inner terminal 21, and, at the other end, by a cap 38 through which it is earthed. The inner terminal assembly is located by a dielectric annulus 37 and electrical energy is propagated between the outer, exponentially tapered member 30 and the inner (dissipative) member 35. The latter is surrounded by co-axial dielectric tubes 33, 34 defining inner and outer annular liquid-flow passages 56, 57. These respectively communicate, through radial passages, with an inlet chamber 53 and an outlet chamber 60, and they are inter-connected by radial passages 58. Thus, liquid flows from the earthed end of the load, over the resistive member 35 and back to the earthed end. Circulation is maintained by a pump 16 in series with a heat-exchanger 15. A restricted flow of coolant is maintained in a narrow annular passage 63 between the internal surface of tube 35 and the exterior of a dielectric rod 36. The passage 63 is provided, for this purpose, with bleed ports 62, 66.
