Abstract
1449056 Separating helium from gas mixtures BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 7 Aug 1974 [7 Aug 1973] 37410/73 Heading B1L [Also in Division H1] In a gas laser in which a 75% He, 15% N and 10% CO 2 active gas medium flows through a gas tube 1 from an inlet to an exhaust, the helium content of the exhaust gas is substantially recovered by diffusion through one or more semi-permeable membranes 5 and is then used to augment the fresh gases 9 applied to the laser inlet. A high gas flow rate system is shown which includes a blower 2 and compressor 3 in the exhaust gas path leading to gas fractionation units 4, 7. Each unit includes at least one fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer membrane 0.001 inch thick, and at least 3 square metres in area. Both units are coupled in parallel to a water vapour and impurity trap 8 and a controlling valve 9 in the inlet path. A low gas flow rate system may alternatively be used comprising a vacuum pump 2 and an oil vapour trap 3.
