Abstract
1448593 Magnetic coated recording discs BASF AG 9 Nov 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52063/73 Heading B2E Magnetic recording discs are produced by coating a non-magnetic metal base disc with a dispersion of finely divided magnetic pigment and finely divided non-magnetic pigment having a Moh's hardness of at least 6 in a solution in an organic solvent of a binder, drying the coating, and optionally curing, and subsequently grinding and polishing, the non- magnetic metal base disc prior to application of the magnetic coating being provided with a hard, non-magnetic intermediate layer which can be ground and polished, by applying a dispersion of a finely divided non-magnetic pigment having a Mohs hardness of at least 6 in a curable binder which provides firm cohesion of the non-magnetic pigment particles and good adhesion of the intermediate layer to the non- magnetic metal base discs. Suitable non-magnetic pigments are aluminium oxide, chromium oxide, quartz, cerium dioxide, alpha-iron oxide and titanium dioxide. The curable binder may be polyurethanes, or mixtures thereof with polycarbonates, curable epoxy resins and curable amino, melamine or phenolic resins, curable epoxy resins and their mixtures with polyaminoamides, or with curable melamine-formaldehyde precondensates or phenol-formaldehyde precondensates or mixtures of curable N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylolmethacrylamide copolymers with curable soluble amino or phenolic precondensates. A preferred binder is a mixture of curable epoxy resins or polyepoxide compounds as curable precondensates of phenols or alkylphenols and formaldehyde. The weight ratio of pigment to binder may be 0.5-1 to 5-1. Preferably the intermediate layer is ground and polished prior to application of the magnetic coating. Suitable non- magnetic pigments for the magnetic coating are silicon carbide, boron carbide, aluminium oxide or silicon dioxide.
