Abstract

1448320 Lighweight material WASHING- TON STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FOUNDATION Inc 25 Nov 1974 [4 March 1974] 50972/74 Heading C3N An inorganic composition that forms a rigid monolithic lightweight mass upon application of external heat comprises cenospheres separated from the fly ash formed when pulverized coal is burned and phosphoric acid. The composition may further comprise a metal phosphate or a source of metal phosphate selected from materials reactive with phosphoric acid and containing aluminium, zinc, magnesium or chromium. Suitable sources are metal oxides, hydroxides or carbonates. In such a situation the molar ratio of metal phosphate to free phosphoric acid in the liquid may be between 0À1/1 and 1/1. The ratio by weight of liquid binder to cenospheres is preferably in a proportion of one part liquid binder to 0À5-3À5 parts cenospheres. The composition is moulded into a mass having the desired physical configuration and the moulded mass is heated to a temperature below which sintering of the cenospheres occurs. The moulded mass may further comprise an organic powder or beads of a material thatvolatilizes during the heating step, e.g. hollow phenolic beads or polystyrene or polyethylene powders; a material that foams during the heating step, e.g. metal carbonate or a metal such as aluminium or magnesium; or fly ash as an inorganic filler. The temperature to which the moulded mass is heated may be 200-950‹ C.
