Abstract

1448185 Screwing-up or unscrewing pipes VARCO INTERNATIONAL Inc 27 Jan 1975 [14 March 1974] 3469/75 Heading B3N A pipe joint make-up or break-out tool 10 comprises two pipe gripping assemblies 20 and 21 each of which comprises a pair of hinged jaws 25, 26 and grips in use a corresponding pipe section 11 or 12. The assemblies are partly rotated relatively to each other to unscrew or screw up the pipe sections by power actuated actuating means 23 and 24 each of which is mounted on one assembly and acts at the hinge connection of the other assembly. The jaws of both assemblies in their open position, Fig. 9, not shown, are positioned around the pipe sections and then closed and retained in this position by spring loaded latch assemblies 39 which include locking members 47. Hydraulic valve 64, Fig. 4, is operated and cylinder and piston units 62, 63, on each unit force serrated gripping dies 54, 55 towards fixed gripping dies 53, 56 to grip the pipe valve 78 is then operated to actuate units 23 and 24 to relatively move assemblies about the axis of the pipe. The gripping assemblies are held together by flanges 93 and (96) (Fig. 7, not shown on the jaws 25 and 25a on which arcuate portions (92) and (95) of plates 85a and (85) bear. Cooperating lugs (97) (Fig. 11, not shown) and surfaces (98) on mounting flanges 73 for the die actuating cylinders 62, 63 of the assemblies enable the adjacent jaws of both assemblies to be closed on the pipe simultaneously by moving only one.
