Abstract
1448118 Pressure casting machines REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT 4 Oct 1973 [9 Oct 1972 11 Jan 1973] 46487/73 Heading B3F In a low pressure casting apparatus in which metal is forced up a tube 3 and into a mould 1 by gas pressure acting on the surface of molten metal contained within a furnace, the tube 3 is connected to a member 4 located within a cavity in the mould 1 and provided with an opening 6 through which the metal passes to the casting cavity of the mould and the member 4 is heated by a gas flame. The heating gas is supplied through a duct 7 in the mould and the burnt gases exhausted through a chimney 9 lined with a ceramic sleeve 10. An inert gas, e.g. N 2 , is supplied through a passage 19 and passes into the member 4 through a tightly coiled steel strip 14 to prevent ingress of air into the tube 3 when the mould is opened. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the inert gas passes into the tube 3 from a heated reservoir 24, the gas being compressed within the reservoir by the molten metal during injection of the metal into the mould and expanding on release of the casting pressure. Additional inert gas is supplied via a solenoid valve 26 and escapes through the opening 6 when the mould is open. The tube 3 is connected to the mould via a manifold 31.
